Due to budget concerns that are effecting several counties in Maryland, including Frederick County, we are changing the way we plow roads.  We will plow 2 lanes on all roads so that cars may pass.  We will not be clearing curb-to-curb as we have done in the past seasons.

Here are some tips to follow during a snow event:

•    Per County Code, all County roads are designated Snow
Emergency Routes.

•    Please park vehicles in driveways and not on the roadway
or in cul-de-sacs.  Vehicles in the roadways or cul-de-sacs
will be towed at the owner’s expense.

•    If you don’t have access to an off-street parking area,
neighborhoods can help by parking all vehicles on the same
side of the street.  This gives the plow more room to work.

•    If you shovel your driveway apron before the snow plow
comes through, always place the snow on the right,
facing the street.

•    Stay at least two car lengths behind a snow plow for every
20 mph you are traveling; never cut between a caravan of
plows that clearing the highway.

•   Listen to the radio before and during a storm to see if the
Snow Emergency Plan has been declared in Frederick
County.

•   Do not drive during a severe winter storm.

DO NOT THROW SNOW BACK INTO THE ROADWAY

Snow removal budget cuts force creative solutions

The weak economy is leaving the county’s Public Works Division out in the cold this winter.

Tom Meunier, head of the Highways and Transportation department, met Thursday with the Frederick County Commissioners to discuss the county’s snow removal operations plan. Budget cuts have plagued the snow removal process this year.

Meunier said the division’s goal is to have 80 percent of the roads cleared by the end of a storm.

“How can we modify our goal and/or our operations?” Meunier asked.

The Public Works Division proposed minimal plowing operations during overtime hours with complete widening of roads during normal work hours, as well as shutting down snow removal operations between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Overtime is paid any time outside the standard 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. workday.

Commissioners President Jan Gardner was unhappy with the suggestion of reducing or eliminating snow removal operations on weekends and county-observed holidays, and not plowing subdivisions until all mainline roads are completely open.

“There is a public safety issue with snow removal that has to be balanced,” she said Thursday. “Snowstorms don’t necessarily happen in time with normal business hours.”
